The Ligne 42 Approach
Bringing artists to the public. Breathing life into local communities.
Ligne 42 was born from the meeting of an artist and an entrepreneur, united by a simple idea: a work of art deserves to be created, but it also deserves to be seen.
Naturally, many artists devote the bulk of their energy to the creative process itself. Yet, making their work known, building an online presence, producing editions, finding distribution channels, communicating, and developing a sales network require time, skills, and resources of a very different nature.
This is precisely where Ligne 42 steps in.
Our ambition is to offer artists a unique model to showcase their work, boost their visibility, and connect them with a wider audience, all while collaboratively building future Ligne 42 collections.
The artist brings their unique perspective, creative world, and sense of place.
Ligne 42 contributes its expertise in publishing, communication, marketing, and distribution.
In this way, each party fosters the other’s growth.
The artist creates; Ligne 42 takes their work to the world.
We have no desire to turn artists into salespeople.
Nor do we want to force them into a "Ligne 42 mold."
We want to enable them to devote more time to what they do best: observing, imagining, and creating.
Ligne 42 builds a framework around their work to help it gain recognition and reach a wider audience:
curating and developing collections;
fine art reproduction and publishing;
showcasing the artwork and the artist’s practice;
online presence at ligne42.com;
communications and editorial content;
social media;
distribution through boutiques, concept stores, and partners;
presence at events, art markets, and exhibitions;
developing collaborations with hotels, architects, businesses, and iconic locations.
The goal is simple:
to give a piece of art more opportunities to connect with its audience.
A model built with artists
We aren't simply looking for artworks to add to a catalog.
We aim to build genuine collaborations with artists.
Each new artist brings their own style and perspective to Ligne 42, as well as—often—an intimate knowledge of a specific place.
A city where they live.
A coastline they have known since childhood.
A harbor, a beach, or a street to which they feel a deep connection.
Places that may be famous to all, or others that remain well-kept secrets.
We want to encourage them to tell the stories of these places in their own unique way. For that is precisely what interests us: seeing a territory through the eyes of someone who loves and knows it.
An artist, a perspective, a region
La Baule and the Guérande peninsula marked the starting point for Ligne 42 with Gérard Lusteau.
Then came Saint-Nazaire, Vannes, and other destinations.
In the future, new artists will enable us to go even further.
An artist based on the Île de Ré might introduce us to their island.
Another might tell the story of Noirmoutier, the Basque Country, Brittany, the Vendée coast, or another region to which they are deeply attached.
We do not simply want to reproduce the most obvious postcard images.
We also want to discover the places that the artists themselves wish to depict.
This model allows Ligne 42 to grow quite naturally:
a new artist brings a new perspective;
a new perspective opens up new locations;
new locations allow us to reach new audiences.
Growing together
This is a core idea behind our approach.
We want the artists who join Ligne 42 to be more than just suppliers of artwork.
They play a part in its development.
Their work enriches the collection.
Their personalities enrich the brand.
Their knowledge of their region enables Ligne 42 to discover new territories and new audiences.
And, in return, the growth of Ligne 42 helps to raise the profile of their work and their names.
We aim to create a virtuous circle:
the more Ligne 42 grows, the more visibility its artists gain;
The more its artists introduce new worlds and regions, the more Ligne 42 expands.
It is an adventure we want to build together.
Showcasing local areas
A Ligne 42 artwork almost always tells a story about a specific place.
Not necessarily its most famous landmark.
Sometimes a street.
A beach.
A row of houses.
A harbor.
A façade.
A detail that only those who truly know the area would notice.
Through their creations, the artists thus help showcase their region—its heritage, landscapes, and identity.
This connection between artistic creation and a deep attachment to a place is one of the guiding threads of Ligne 42.
We love the idea that someone might choose a piece not just because they find it beautiful, but because they instantly recognize a place that is part of their own history.
One house, many artistic voices
Ligne 42 began with the highly distinctive style of Gérard Lusteau.
However, Ligne 42 is not intended to be a school of painting where everyone adopts the same artistic style.
Quite the opposite.
We want to welcome diverse artistic personalities, techniques, and ways of depicting the same region.
Ligne 42’s coherence, therefore, does not rely on an imposed style.
It relies on a curated selection.
We look for:
a genuine artistic vision,
a recognizable identity,
a connection to the location,
a certain elegance,
and artworks one would want to keep for a long time.
A single location can thus be interpreted by multiple artists, giving rise to completely different visions.
It is this diversity that we aim to gradually reveal.
From the studio to the wall
Between the original artwork—necessarily unique and often out of reach for many—and the mass-produced poster, we believe there is another way.
That is the path Ligne 42 is forging.
Creations by genuine artists.
High-quality Fine Art reproductions.
Identified, numbered editions.
And prices that make it possible for more people to bring art into their homes.
This model also gives a single artwork a richer life.
It doesn’t just stay in the studio or with one collector.
It can find its way into multiple homes and regions—and sometimes even return to the very place where it was conceived.
Gérard Lusteau: the first chapter
Gérard Lusteau is the founding artist of Ligne 42.
His work centered on La Baule and the Guérande peninsula provided the opportunity to invent and test this model.
But above all, this initial adventure inspired us to write new chapters.
With other artists.
Other styles.
Other locations.
And always with the same ambition:
to showcase artists, highlight their work, and—together with them—tell the stories of the places we hold dear.

And it all began with a meeting…
Before becoming a project open to other artists, Ligne 42 was born from the meeting of Gérard Lusteau and Olivier Rafin, and an initial collection dedicated to La Baule.
